Former FBI Director Robert Mueller is the special counsel leading the investigation, which includes looking at possible collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.

Pence spokesman Jarrod Agen confirmed the hire and said the Vice President wants a "swift" resolution.

Cullen served as a USA attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia before becoming the chairman of the McGuireWoods law firm.

The Washington Post was first to report the news.

Just out of curiosity, would we know Richard Cullen from any other high-profile cases that Mike Pence is probably not eager to join the ranks of?

Still, that statement is unlikely to quell criticism of Mueller from some of Trump's closest allies — including one of his sons. Ann Coulter similarly noted that since Trump is not under investigation, "Sessions should take it back & fire Mueller".

Pence hired Virginia lawyer Richard Cullen to help him navigate the special counsel investigation into Russian election hacking and its possible Trump campaign ties. As head of the Trump campaign's transition committee, he was involved in the hiring of Michael Flynn as national security adviser.

But obstruction came into play after Trump fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey last month.

A new poll shows a clear majority of Americans think President Donald Trump has tried to interfere with the investigation into Russia's election meddling and potential Trump campaign collusion.

Pence announced his travel plans Thursday as he spoke at a conference in Miami focused on Central America.

Joining the vice president will be Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly.
