The death toll in an apartment building fire in London has risen to 17 and is likely to rise even further, police said Thursday, with many people still missing and firefighters facing hazardous conditions as they searched the charred carcass.
After a massive fire tore through the Grenfell Tower high-rise apartment building in London yesterday claiming the lives of 12 people and injuring 74 others, Adele attended a vigil for all of the victims affected by the tragedy. She said the building's structure was stable enough for fire crews to scale inside, searching for survivors.
Some of these councils, including Wandsworth and Sutton, have said they will seek to implement any recommendations from the London Fire Brigade as a result of the Grenfell Tower fire.
"Tragically now we are not expecting to find anyone else alive", Cotton told British media outlet earlier.
Fire safety engineers were stunned at how rapidly the fire spread, engulfing the building in less than an hour in the middle of the night and preventing firefighters from reaching many trapped inside. The LFB said the fire was controlled after firefighters worked with gas authorities to find a ruptured gas main.
Cotton added that many firefighters were treated for minor injuries and heat exhaustion, and some were traumatized by the inability to save more people.
"We need to have an explanation of this we owe that to the families, to the people who have lost loved ones, friends and the homes in which they lived", May said in a statement. Rkia Hamdan said his daughter Farah Hamdan, her husband Omar Belkadi and their six-month-old daughter were still unaccounted for. "People deserve answers. The inquiry will give them".
Following the fire, the building's safety precautions have been called into question, with some saying cladding - building material usually attached directly to the frame of a building to act as an outer wall to provide insulation and protection from the elements - caused the fire to spread.
