WashPo: Special counsel Mueller investigating Trump for possible obstruction of justice

The Post report cites anonymous sources who were briefed on requests made by investigators. They are expected to work on setting formal terms of how the Hill and federal investigations will co-exist and share information - a major test on that front will be whether the FBI is willing to release Comey's memos of his conversations with Trump, now that they have been provided to Mueller.

Accusations of obstruction arose when last month when Trump fired FBI Director James Comey. Coats later told lawmakers that he never felt pressured to intervene. CNN reported that three members of Mueller's Russian Federation investigation team have donated to Democrats, including Hillary Clinton's campaign for President. "I was sacked, in some way, to change - or the endeavor was to change the way the Russian Federation investigation was being conducted". From what I know of his reputation, he's an honest, no-nonsense, effective prosecutor.

The initial investigation focused exclusively on potential Russian hacking in the 2016 election and whether any Trump surrogates - like former National Security Adviser Gen. Michael Flynn - might have been involved.

A spokesman for Mueller declined to comment. The New York Times reported that Trump had been waved off the idea by advisers.

A spokesman for Trump's personal lawyer in the Russian Federation matter Marc Kasowitz said, "The FBI leak of information regarding the President is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal".

The apparent obstruction probe immediately conjures memories of the Watergate scandal.

The Washington Post previously reported that Trump also asked Rogers and Coats to push back against the FBI's investigation.

Sanders has since denied that Trump intends to do so.

It is not clear whether the White House could use executive privilege to try to block them from speaking to the investigators. "But I asked him to, because I thought that might prompt the appointment of a special counsel".

Ruddy said in an interview Monday with Judy Woodruff of PBS, "I think he's weighing that option".

Since Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself from any Russia-related investigations, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein would then have the authority to remove Mueller.

Rosenstein says the attorney general would be the only one who could fire Mueller. Richardson and his deputy refused.

Solicitor general Robert Bork ultimately fired Cox. However, the White House yesterday said the president had no plans to do so.

Tuesday morning, Trump supporter Ari Fleischer, who served as President George W. Bush's press secretary, again highlighted the issue of Mueller's probe being handled by attorneys who have donated mostly to Democrats, a message that Donald Trump Jr. quickly retweeted to his own 1.7 million followers.
