Comey said he had hoped releasing the information via the media would prompt the appointment of a special counsel to handle the Russian Federation probe, a ploy that ultimately proved successful.
Feinstein also asked Comey why he didn't challenge the president defending his former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, when he believed that Trump was urging him to drop the investigation.
"The president never, in form or substance, directed or suggested that Mr. Comey stop investigating anyone, including suggesting that Mr. Comey 'let Flynn go, '" Kasowitz wrote.
In sworn testimony to the Senate on Thursday, Comey painted Trump as untrustworthy and admitted he asked a "friend", identified as a Columbia University law professor, to release a memo of his conversations with the president to the press.
"That concerned me because that language tracked how the campaign was talking about the FBI's work and that's concerning", he said.
WASHINGTON (AP) - President Donald Trump claimed Friday that James Comey cleared him of wrongdoing in his testimony to Congress.
He asserted that nothing in Comey's testimony to the Senate pointed to collusion with Russian Federation or obstruction of justice.
"And I think you saw today the overwhelming majority of the intel members, Democrats and Republicans, feel that Jim Comey is credible". Indeed, while it supplied critics of Trump's integrity with more ammunition, it would have also fuelled a growing siege mentality among his supporters towards mainstream media.

The reveal of Beyond Good & Evil 2 was one of excitement, but the means in which the game was showcased was a disappointment. The game is set in Egypt, and will explore the origins of the Assassin Order and its battle against the Knights Templar.
The president has suggested several times, but not confirmed, that tapes of his private talks with Comey exist ─ a prospect the ex-FBI chief has emphatically welcomed.
He further said that the whole hearing was "devastating" and included multiple accusations, one of them being Comey calling the president a liar while under oath. And legal experts have questioned whether Comey's leak broke any law.
Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., tweeted throughout the hearing and defended his father.
"The administration then chose to defame me - and, more importantly, the Federal Bureau of Investigation - by saying the organization was in disarray, that it was poorly led, that the workforce had lost confidence in its leader", Comey said in his opening remarks.
Iohannis says he's honored to be at the White House.
Republican Senator Susan Collins called on Sunday for Trump to "voluntarily turn them over" to the Senate Intelligence Committee and to the special counsel, Robert Mueller, investigating possible collusion between Trump aides and Russian Federation.
Trump added that he "would be glad" to tell Robert Mueller, the special counsel who is overseeing the FBI's investigation into Russia's election meddling and whether Trump's campaign played a role, "exactly what I just told you", but under oath. "Those", said Comey, "were lies". "The endeavor was to change the way the Russian Federation investigation was being conducted".
The disclosures that followed Comey's firing have raised questions about why Comey, known in government for an independent streak and a willingness to buck protocol, did not speak out publicly while on the job, or at least make his objections directly known to the president.
