Phil Housley started his National Hockey League playing career in Buffalo and now his first head coaching job will be there, too.
Housley is a widely respected coach having spent the past four seasons in Nashville. He is credited for overseeing a highly skilled and speedy group of defensemen who helped Nashville make its first Stanley Cup Final appearance in franchise history.
"He brings such a different element to coaching because of the player he was; he sees the game unlike probably anyone else who's ever played the game", Subban said. Sports."Since "Day One" he came in here, I think for a lot of the D he was a similar player as the way he thought the game and I guess thought the game should be played".
In 1996, he was part of Team USA's gold medal-winning team at the World Cup of Hockey.

While coaching there, Housley accepted a number of opportunities to coach for Team USA.
The Sabres have hired former defenseman Phil Housely. He also holds the franchise record for assists by a rookie (47 in 1982-83).
The Minnesota native started his coaching career with Stillwater Area High School in 2004. The Predators ranked in the top two in the league in goals by defensemen every season and finished in the top half in fewest goals allowed in each of the last three seasons. He went on to play eight seasons in Buffalo, ranking fifth in team history in points (558) and games played (608). He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015.
