Phil Mickelson officially withdraws from US Open

Some of golf's biggest names were among the early starters, including a mouth-watering threesome of U.S. Open winners in reigning champion Dustin Johnson, 2015 victor Jordan Spieth and Germany's Martin Kaymer, who lifted the trophy in 2014.

Mickelson will attend his daughter Amanda's high school graduation in Carlsbad, Calif. Amanda, the Pacific Ridge School president, will give the commencement speech.

Phil Mickelson officially has withdrawn from the the U.S. Open, the U.S. Golf Association annnounced Thursday morning.

In 2013, when Amanda graduated from middle school, Mickelson flew home from Philadelphia for the event, and then flew back and arrived at Merion Golf Club in Haverford, Pa., about two hours before his first-round tee time.

Mickelson holds the U.S. Open record with six runner-up finishes, and it's the only major keeping him from the career Grand Slam.

Amanda was born a day after the US Open at Pinehurst in 1999, when her father finished second to Payne Stewart.

Hoffman, teeing off on the 10th hole, notched a birdie on his first hole before another on the par-four 12th to move one shot clear of the field. Winged Foot is where he made a double bogey on the final hole to lose by one.
