According to a report in the New York Times, President Donald Trump had already planned to fire Robert Mueller after he learned the special counsel is friends with fired FBI Director James Comey.

Trump - and Attorney General Jeff Sessions - have denied they interfered with the investigation.

Several legal experts said that Mr Comey's testimony, about Mr Trump telling him he expected loyalty and hoped he could drop an investigation of a former top aide, could bolster obstruction of justice allegations against the President.

In a subsequent tweet, Trump wrote, "You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!"

Sessions was forced to recuse himself in March from the federal investigation into possible Russian interference in the USA election after media reports said that he twice met with Kislyak during the 2016 campaign and did not disclose that to the Senate during his confirmation hearing in January.

Testifying at a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing, Sessions, who was a close Trump adviser during the battle for the presidency, said it is a "detestable and appalling lie" to suggest that he participated in or was aware of any collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.

Mr Trump said when he dismissed Mr Comey on May 9 that the reason was the former FBI chief's handling of the investigation into Democrat Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server.

A spokesman for Trump's lawyer told NBC: "The FBI leak of information regarding the president is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal". The five told the American newspaper that three senior United States intelligence officials are ready to appear in front of Special Consul Mueller and provide testimony in the matter.

"If Trump and his associates have done something improper, you've got to investigate that as well", Stewart said.

Recent reports have said Trump also requested help from Coats and Rogers to pressure Comey to end the investigation into Flynn's activities.

While a sitting president is unlikely to face criminal prosecution, obstruction of justice could form the basis for impeachment.
