Bill Cosby walks from the Montgomery County Courthouse after jurors in Cosby's sexual assault trial ended first day deliberations without reaching a verdict in Norristown, Pa., Monday, June 12, 2017.

They'll resume deliberations Tuesday morning. Constand says Cosby drugged and molested her as she lay helpless on his couch at his nearby home. It was read to them by the judge.

The defense had more trouble trying to discredit Constand, 44, who spent some seven hours on the witness stand. Cosby's lawyers hammered home the point that she doesn't know just when it happened, and they questioned why she had regular phone contact with Cosby later that spring, including more than 50 calls to him. Cosby has been accused of raping or assaulting dozens of women, often after offering or slipping them drugs. McMonagle said that while the comedian had been unfaithful to his wife, he hadn't committed a crime.

Prosecutors say his prior use of Quaaludes shows that Cosby had knowledge of what he was doing when he gave her the pills.

"Drugging somebody and putting them in a position where you can do what you want with them is not romantic".

The extramarital affair was an example of a flaw in Cosby's character, and not criminal behavior, McMonagle said.

Only one person took the witness stand on the sixth day of the trial and it was a police detective.

The defense closed by accusing Constand of lying about an affair with Cosby and concocting the allegations to take advantage of the wealthy, older star.

Then-President Barack Obama in late December ordered sanctions on Russian spy agencies, closed two Russian compounds and expelled 35 diplomats the US said were really spies.

Next, instructions are expected to be given to the jury, which will decide on the three counts of aggravated indecent assault.

The black comedian once known as America's Dad for his portrayal of kindly Dr. Cliff Huxtable on "The Cosby Show" suggested recently that race could have played a role in the case against him. "Because of what he wanted", Steele told jury members.

McMonagle, in his closing argument, tried to sow doubt about Constand's story. Cosby's alleged fondling of Andrea Constand, her state of unconsciousness and her lack of consent.

"Don't leave your common sense in Pittsburgh."This isn't talking to a trustee".

During his closing argument, McMonagle flipped between stage-whispered intimacy and earsplitting verbal explosions - as he ran through a long list of possible culprits he says are responsible for landing his client at the center of one of the most high-profile criminal cases in recent American history. "Why are we running from the truth of this case - this relationship? Why?"

"Yes", replied the defendant, who on Monday was accompanied by his wife of 53 years, Camille, for the first time in court. Prosecutors presented nearly no forensic evidence, and legal experts have said the trial fits the "he said-she said" arguments so common to sexual offense cases. Constand took a seat in the front row on the opposite side of the courtroom. Cosby's lawyers haven't denied that the interaction in question occurred, but they say it was consensual.

Bill Cosby's defense lawyer says the comedian and his primary accuser were lovers.

In his excited and animated closing, McMonagle made emotional appeals to the jury, weaving anecdotes about parenting and patriotism as he argued Cosby's prosecution was "nonsense" driven by lawyers and media attention.

"This is not a civil case about money, money, money. We're talking about all the man's tomorrows", he said.

The jury began deliberating on Monday evening after the prosecution's closing statement.

Steele also reminded jurors about a telephone conversation in which Cosby apologized to Constand's mother and described himself as a "sick man".

"All the fancy lawyering you have can't get you around your own words", Steele said.

Constand said she was "mistaken" when she made those statements to police.

"There are some things in this case that should be fuzzy. Why?"

" 'She'd remember it for the next 365 days and all the days of her life if there were a sexual assault in this case, ' the attorney said".

In a tense cross-examination, defense attorneys pointed out that several of Constand's initial statements to police, including the date of the alleged assault, were later proved to be false. Adding weight to the allegations was the revelation in 2015 that Mr Cosby in a deposition for a 2005 civil suit filed by Ms Constand had admitted to obtaining quaaludes to help him in his pursuit of sex with women.

Cosby later told police the pills were Benadryl, an over-the-counter cold and allergy medicine. Legal experts and courtroom observers generally dismissed that suggestion as a bluff, perhaps created to throw prosecutors - who ended with a lot of momentum - off balance.

The defence case consisted of a six-minute appearance by a detective, seemingly created to remind jurors that Andrea Constand had visited with Cosby at an out-of-state casino and that police knew he had vision problems even then.

Experts had said the legal risks would be considerable.

In his closing statement, McMonagle told jurors that Constand had changed her story after speaking with attorneys who specialize in sexual assault cases.
