U.S. president Donald Trump has visited critically-ill party whip Steve Scalise, who was shot by a rifle-wielding attacker as he practised for a charity baseball game.
Medics rushed into the field after Scalise and others including a congressional staffer, a lobbyist and two members of the Capitol police force were injured. Two congressman said they had sustained minor injuries while trying to take cover.
The president and first lady stopped by the hospital and brought two bouquets of flowers with them, according to the New York Post. A hospital spokeswoman said Scalise, 51, remained in critical condition following his first surgery. "Pray for Steve!" he wrote on Twitter. "Those aren't good odds", Brooks said. "He was texting, letting people know we were under fire and that we needed help", Williams said.
"And as I pulled out on Monroe Street, that borders the baseball field, there was a white male getting out of his van", Johnson told the News Center Wednesday afternoon.
Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent who sought the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination, said he had been told that Hodgkinson had served as a volunteer with his campaign.
Sanders said he was "sickened by this despicable act" and denounced any use of violence. "Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society and I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms".
Despite the injuries and frightening moments on the Alexandria, Virginia field, the congressional baseball game planned for Thursday will go on as scheduled. "It's Time to Destroy Trump & Co".
Sanders: Sickened at shooting attack by possible supporter
All we would have had would have been baseball bats versus a rifle. "It was just a little odd", he said. Robert Becker , director of Sanders' Iowa campaign, said staff workers could not recall Hodgkinson .
"At times our emotions clearly can get the best of us", he said. And when Hodgkinson's name was made public, DeSantis said he did a Google search that left no doubt he had spoken with the gunman. After an exchange of gunfire with police, the shooter died.
"It took the second shot for me to understand what was happening and hear everybody". I heard Steve Scalise over near second base scream. "The next thing I remember was somebody on the field yelling, 'Run, he's got a gun!'".

The shooting occurred at a popular park and baseball complex in Alexandria, Virginia, across the Potomac River from Washington, where Republican lawmakers and others were gathered for a morning practice about 7 a.m. "My colleagues were targeted today". Barton is the baseball team's manager. There is no question that their bravery saved the lives of my colleagues, their staff, and others who were at the ballpark.
The Congressional Baseball Game is a charity game between Republican and Democratic Congress members established in 1909. Still, "everybody is responsible for the dialogue that goes on", he said.
During their 20-minute visit to the hospital, Trump sat next to Scalise's bed and spoke with the congressman's family, said White House spokesman Sean Spicer.
