Warmbier, a 23-year-old college student who was arrested in North Korea in January 2016, was medically evacuated from the country on Tuesday after a USA official envoy learned that he had been in a coma for more than a year.

Rodman landed in Pyongyang Tuesday, hours before it released 23-year-old Otto Warmbier, who was serving a 15-year prison term - for trying to steal a propaganda banner from his hotel. North Korea told a USA official that Warmbier contracted botulism and slipped into the coma after taking a sleeping pill, a senior State Department official told CNN.

Mr. Tillerson released a statement: "At the direction of the President, the Department of State has secured the release of Otto Warmbier from North Korea".

March 2016 Warmbier, of Wyoming, Ohio, reportedly said in a tearful statement ahead of the trial in Pyongyang that he tried to steal the poster in exchange for a $10,000 used vehicle.

Multiple people involved in unofficial talks with North Korea say the Trump administration has been making overtures toward the Kim regime, including efforts to set up a secret back channel to the North Korean leader using "an associate of Trump's" rather than the usual lineup of North Korea experts and former officials who talk to Pyongyang's representatives.

A second senior State Department official said the USA has not yet accepted the North Korean version of events in terms of the timing and cause of how Warmbier fell into a coma.

Tillerson said the State Department is continuing "to have discussions" with North Korea about the release of other three American citizens imprisoned there. "At the moment, we're just treating this like he's been in an accident", Fred Warmbier told The Washington Post.

A senior American official told New York Times they obtained intelligence reports in recent weeks indicating the student had been repeatedly beaten while in North Korea and they had feared he was dead.

In 2014, Rodman arranged a basketball game with other former NBA players and North Koreans and regaled leader Kim with a rendition of "Happy Birthday". "The travel warnings by the State Department are not working", said Anthony Ruggiero, a former official at both the State and Treasury departments. He is looking to increase economic and diplomatic pressure on North Korea, with help from China but has said he's open to meeting Kim.
