Durant has attracted ire for his decision to join the Warriors, who won 73 games past year but lost a 3-1 lead in the 2016 Finals to James' Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Warriors, who beat Cleveland in the 2015 Finals only to lose to them a year ago after squandering a 3-1 series lead, went a record-setting 16-1 in the playoffs, their only loss coming in Game Four of the best-of-seven championship.

Kevin Durant and the Golden State Warriors dethroned the Cleveland Cavaliers to win the NBA Finals. Kerr's team set an National Basketball Association record for regular-season wins with 73 last season and returned to the Finals, but lost to Cleveland in seven games.

While it was a huge win for the Warriors - it's the franchise's fifth championship win and second since 1975 - it was arguably an even more meaningful win for Nike athlete and Finals MVP Kevin Durant.

LeBron James fell two assists shy of his second consecutive triple-double, contributing team highs of 41 points and 13 boards for the Cavaliers.

You'll recall that it was Cleveland that came back from a 3-1 series deficit in last year's finals to stun Golden State.

But coach Steve Kerr, who only returned to the team in time for game two of the finals after a period of medical leave to deal with complications arising from back surgery, joked afterwards: "We have very little talent actually, it's mostly coaching!"

KD added that she knows everything he went trough and that in fact, they together were in it all the time.

Last year, Green was suspended for Game 5 of the Finals due to accumulating too many flagrant foul points.

Durant averaged 35.2 points over the five-game series against the Cavaliers. Whenever he is asked about his own accomplishments, he is always quick to offer a reminder just as he did with a new National Basketball Association champions hat on his head: "It's a team sport".

Durant might be asked to do the same - take less than he might command elsewhere to allow Golden State to keep Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston without salary cap issues.

Curry and his teammates blazed through the playoffs, finishing the postseason with an impressive 16-1 record, matching the NBA's best mark.
