Democrat to grill US Attorney General Sessions on Comey firing

Sessions is especially important to the case because as the attorney general, he was Comey's boss, and because Comey testified "the attorney general lingered by my chair, but the president thanked him and said he wanted to speak only with me". He instead advocated for broad presidential powers to curtail immigration, an issue that drew him to candidate Trump early.

Trump has denied Comey's version of events.

In a letter, Sessions said some members were going to ask about the investigation into Russian meddling in the presidential election. The announcement of his testimony was made without comment from committee officials, who decline to say whether Sessions would be sworn to tell the truth.

Senators had been pushing for Sessions to appear publicly to answer questions about his contacts with Russian officials during the campaign. Sessions had come under fire for failing to report two other meetings with the ambassador, but he says he recused only because he had worked so closely with Trump during the campaign.

He was questioned over his claim that President Trump asked him to "let go" of the investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Mr Sessions removed himself in March from involvement in any probe of alleged Russian election meddling after it emerged he had failed to disclose a meeting he had past year with Moscow's ambassador. The next day, Sessions recused himself from the Russian Federation investigation and said it would be overseen by his deputy attorney general, who last month appointed a special counsel to handle the probe. A Justice Department spokeswoman tells NPR that Sessions requested it be public. "Totally illegal? Very 'cowardly!'" Flynn was sacked by Trump on February 13.

The hearing comes less than a week after Comey's explosive testimony.

The appearance before the Senate intelligence committee comes one week after former FBI Director Comey cryptically told lawmakers the bureau had expected Sessions to recuse himself weeks before he did from an investigation into contacts between Trump campaign associates and Russian Federation during the 2016 election.

So, what did the Federal Bureau of Investigation know about Sessions on February 14 that made Comey and others so confident he would recuse?

But behind the scenes, there was significant pushback from Democrats - including Senate Intelligence Committee vice chairman Mark Warner - who raised objections with Senate Intelligence Chairman Richard Burr that Sessions may be trying to skirt public scrutiny.

Sessions has been dogged by questions about possible additional encounters with the ambassador, Sergey Kislyak.
