Trump accuses ex-FBI director Comey of cowardice over 'leaks'

USA president Donald Trump has accused fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey of lying to Congress and said he was "100%" willing to testify under oath about their conversations.

He said he hoped the records would prompt the appointment of a special counsel to oversee the investigation into Russian interference in last year's USA election. Mr. Trump tweeted on Friday. The statement went on to say that Mr. Trump "feels completely and totally vindicated", and that "he is eager to continue to move forward with his agenda".

Mr Trump's aides have dodged questions about whether conversations relevant to the Russian Federation investigation have been recorded, and so did the president in a series of teases. "This had not been my practice in the past".

Comey admitted Thursday in testimony before the Senate intelligence committee that, after Trump fired him on May 9, he asked a friend to leak his documentation of a meeting with the president to the press in the hope of prompting the appointment of a special prosecutor to investigate Russian election interference.

He branded the president a liar and said Trump urged him to abandon the investigation into the former national security adviser Michael Flynn, an allegation Trump has denied.

"After only tweeting once Saturday to promote "infrastructure week", Trump sent a flurry Sunday morning, slamming the "#FakeNews MSM" for allegedly not reporting on economic progress and labeling Democrats "obstructionists".
