He becomes the first man or woman in the Open Era, which began in 1968, to win 10 titles at a Grand Slam. Nadal who has been hailed as the "King of Clay" courtesy his stupendous success on the red clay at Roland Garros added another piece of silverware to his already glittering silverware. Nadal is no longer the 19-year-old he was when he won his first French Open title in his tournament debut in 2005, wearing long white pirate shorts, his flowing locks wrapped by a white headband, his sleeveless shirt revealing bulging biceps. He is now 79-2 at the French Open over his career and 102-2 in all best-of-five-set matches on clay.

Annabel Croft, former British number one: Huge congratulations to Rafael Nadal winning his 10th Roland Garros title! After one rally in which he bullied his foe all over the court, Wawrinka placed a the ball in his mouth in frustration. The Swiss, the world No 3, had won all three of his Grand Slam final appearances, including the 2015 French Open, and had eliminated Andy Murray in an epic five-set semi-final earlier this week. Roger Federer holds the record of having won 18 Majors.

Fourth-seeded Rafael Nadal of Spain is facing No. 3 Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland on Court Philippe Chatrier.

Nadal played brilliantly all two weeks, dropping zero sets and only 35 games.

"It's really incredible. To win La Decima is very, very special", Nadal said courtside. "It's very emotional for me".

'The feeling I have here is impossible to describe.

"The nerves, the adrenaline that I feel when I play in this court is impossible to compare".

Nadal was joined on the presentation by his uncle Toni, his coach since boyhood, who is stepping down at the end of the year.

"It was hard", said Nadal's uncle and coach, Toni. "I have 10 trophies here and without him none of them would have been possible so many, many thanks for everything".

"I don't know if I will ever get to meet the player who will do better than I did".

"It's hard for me to compare this to any other event".

"He's playing the best he's ever played", the third-seeded Wawrinka told a news conference after watching Nadal collect the trophy "He's the best ever on clay; it's always a tough challenge".

Only twelve months ago a tearful Nadal bailed from his favorite tournament in Paris in the first week with a wrist injury, another in a seemingly endless list of ailments to derail the 31-year-old.

This was the first Roland Garros final between two players aged 30 and over since 1969, when 30-year-old Rod Laver defeated 34-year-old Ken Rosewall.

He whipped the crowd up when he created a game point to hold for 2-3 only for Nadal to scramble a defensive lob just inside the baseline, with Wawrinka netted the smash. And I finished the year being World No. 1, winning here (in Paris), winning the US Open.

From there, it was all downhill. But Nadal pulled away to win four straight games from 2-2.

Nadal immediately put Wawrinka in the same position on the next game.

"But you need the right circumstances, the right ingredients to win 10 French Open titles". It worked: Of the first seven points won by Nadal, six ended with missed forehands by Wawrinka.
