Qatar's ties with Iran and Islamist groups

While Pentagon and State Department officials have expressed support for Qatar and generally opposed the Saudi-led blockade, President Trump has endorsed the moves against them, accusing Qatar of "an extremist ideology", and saying they are funding terrorism "at a very high level".

Gas has helped transform the tiny emirate into one of the world's richest countries, fuelling its rise into a major regional player and helping fund huge infrastructure projects such as the 2022 football World Cup, which Qatar will host.

Qatar strongly rejects the allegations and has said it is open to talks on ending the dispute, which also saw the three Gulf states order all Qatari citizens out of their countries within 14 days.

Iran has urged Qatar and neighbouring Gulf countries to engage in dialogue to resolve their dispute.

"Our position on countering terrorism is stronger than numerous signatories of the joint statement - a fact that has been conveniently ignored by the authors", the government said.

The conference was attended by Aziz, Pakistan's Ambassador to the UN Maleeha Lodhi, as well as envoys to UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait, who were called back especially for the event.

Despite the unprecedented sanctions, Qatar says that its crucial exports of liquified natural gas have not been interrupted.

Iranian officials said yesterday that tonnes of vegetables had been sent from Iran to Qatar since the measures were taken against it.

Puerto Rico votes for statehood

Qatar's official overseer of charities denied on Sunday that philanthropic groups in the country backed terrorism, saying it deplored the accusation.

Iran's national carrier on June 11 said it has sent five planeloads of food to Qatar, which is suffering shortages amid the blockade.

In a sign Gulf states were seeking to lessen the human impact of their June 5 severing of ties, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the UAE said on Sunday they had set up hotlines to help families with Qatari members, without elaborating.

He added that Iran would continue to deliver the food items as long as there is demand for it.

Washington has sent mixed signals on the crisis, despite Qatar's position as a key ally and host to the largest USA airbase in the region.

"(Kuwait) affirms the readiness of the brothers in Qatar to understand the reality of the qualms and concerns of their brothers and to heed the noble endeavours to enhance security and stability", Kuwait's state news agency KUNA quoted Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah al-Khalid al-Sabah as saying.

A previous mediation effort by Kuwait in which the Emir Sheikh Sabah al Ahmad al Jaber al Sabah shuttled between Riyadh, Abu Dhabi and Doha, failed to achieve an immediate breakthrough.
