Ananya Vinay, a 12-year-old sixth grader from Fresno, California, swept the 90th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee Thursday night after a tense final 25 rounds.

New rules this year are aimed to prevent tie endings like last year, where two joint winners both got Dollars 40,000 cash prizes.

According to her she arrived at the competition with high hopes and was disappponted by her performance but will not allow that to derail her ambitions. Show hosts Alisyn Camerota and Chris Cuomo chose to ask her to spell "covfefe" - the typo made by President Trump in an unfinished late-night tweet that quickly went viral. Sometimes she would blurt out questions, with little intonation - "Part of speech?"

Ananya's victory broke the Bee's three-year streak of ending in a tie.

The request by Alisyn Camerota and Chris Cuomo seemed to confuse Ananya Vinay, the 12-year old spelling champion, Mediaite reported.

"I like finding stories behind words, investigating them further", she said.

But Rohan misspelled the word marram and Ananya got two words right to win.

"Definition please", she asked like the champ that she is. But she has other plans for the future and hopes to invent a new kind of refrigerator, she said at a press conference. Ananya added that it was interesting to go back and forth for so many rounds. Now, she'll return only in a ceremonial role to help present the trophy to next year's victor.
