Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionists were in talks Friday to become kingmakers by lending British Prime Minister Theresa May enough backing for a parliamentary majority - support that throws the spotlight on the party's deeply right-wing outlook.
Katie Perrior, May's former director of communications, who quit when the snap election was called, has attacked the prime minister's governing style, and her joint chiefs of staff, Fiona Hill and Nick Timothy. That leaves the Conservatives with 317 seats in Parliament out of 650, meaning they're likely to need the DUP's 10 votes to win a confidence motion.
Theresa May today struck a business as usual tone as she announced that she will carry on as Britain's Prime Minister despite a hung Parliament verdict in the general election and kick start Brexit negotiations with the European Union (EU) as planned in 10 days time.
The DUP were seen for many years as the radical element of the unionist movement during the conflict in Northern Ireland and throughout the peace process, overtaking the Ulster Unionist Party as the biggest group in the years following the Good Friday Agreement.
"It's an issue very close to my heart and one that I wanted categoric assurances from the prime minister on, and I received (them)", said Davidson, who is engaged to be married to her female partner.
Earlier, May had expressed her regret at the huge losses the Conservative party suffered - winning just 318 seats, well short of the 326 overall majority.
"We have discovered that she is a competent minister, potentially a tough negotiator, but a awful campaigner".
May's office has said that the most senior Cabinet members - including Treasury chief Philip Hammond, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Home Secretary Amber Rudd - will keep their jobs, but she is expected to shuffle the lower ranks of ministers.
"Conservative and Unionist party has the legitimacy and ability to provide that certainty by commanding a majority in the House of Commons", she said.

It said the campaign failed to get "Theresa's positive plan for the future across" or "notice the surge in Labour support".
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn had urged Mrs May to resign and allow him to form a minority administration, declaring: "We are ready to serve this country".
Former minister Anna Soubry said Mrs May should "consider her position" after a "dreadful campaign" while backbencher Heidi Allen suggested she could be out within a matter of months, depending on the Brexit negotiations.
THE north's two largest parties dealt a series of devastating blows to their rivals to emerge from the General Election stronger than ever.
However, there have been serious doubts on the stability of such a government and May's own leadership of the Tory party.
"The Prime Minister and her team appear to be trying to get out on the front foot with this - she wants to hold her ground".
Instead, she said: "There's an terrible lot of issues surrounding Brexit that need to be discussed".
The arrangement with the DUP will make governing easier, but it makes some Conservatives uneasy.
"I certainly think that there will be contact made over the weekend but I think it is too soon to talk about what we're going to do", she said.
