Sri Lanka stun India with historic chase of 322 runs for win

India set Sri Lanka a tough target of 322, which the islanders easily chased down with seven wickets in hand. The Lankan legend had been in super form this county season and had hit five centuries and missed a record sixth one by a whisker.

After suffering a heart-wrenching seven-wicket defeat against Sri Lanka, India skipper Virat Kohli has asserted that his side will have to push harder and put more runs on the board in what would be a virtual quarter-final against South Africa in the ongoing Champions Trophy.

Kusal Mendis also made an excellent 89 and captain Angelo Mathews an unbeaten 52 as Sri Lanka hauled themselves back into contention for qualification to the semi-finals and in doing blew Group B wide open. Asela Gunaratne was the only Sri Lankan bowler to maitain a good economy rate. He was aptly supported by Danushka Gunathilaka with his knock of 76 (72).

India are likely to look at their batting approach after a total of 321 proved not enough on a good Oval pitch, while the bowling could also be tweaked with off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin expected to play in his first game of the tournament.

Shikhar Dhawan's 10th ODI century and half-centuries from Rohit Sharma (78) and MS Dhoni (63) had taken India up to 321-6, with the win seemingly in the bag.

"As a cricketer honestly for me personally, I crave games like this", India captain Kohli told a press conference on Saturday. You tend to get overexcited, and then you commit errors that can cost the team important runs, or you fail to grab all the chances because you're overexcited and that can cost the team as well.
