Bacsinszky reached the French Open semifinals for the second time on Tuesday with a rain-hit 6-4, 6-4 win over home hope Kristina Mladenovic.
Ostapenko is the first teenager to reach the Roland Garros semi-finals since Serbia's Ana Ivanovic, and the first to play in a Grand Slam semi-final since American Madison Keys at the 2015 US Open.
"To play a semifinal of Roland Garros on your birthday, I think it's really nice", said Ostapenko, who lost first round previous year. On resumption she held her nerve to close out the second set for the loss of a further three games over a full course of an hour and 49 minutes.
Ostapenko said: "We are good friends, because we played the doubles in China a year ago, and that's how I got to know her, she is a really nice person". "If I have a chance to go to the net, I'm going to the net and I just finish the point, because I think it's easier", she said.
However, she lost her serve trailing 4-5 to hand the first set to Wozniacki.
"At the beginning it was really windy and tough for me to get my game, because I couldn't expect where the ball was bouncing", admitted Ostapenko, who moved into the semifinals at a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in career after the Latvian beat Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Torrential rain forced Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic's quarter-finals at the French Open to be delayed until today. "Not really", she added.
She now has time to regroup before meeting 19-year-old Jelena Ostapenko who ousted Caroline Wozniacki.
Bodies and wreckage found in search for missing plane
The four propeller plane is designed and manufactured by China's Shaanxi Aircraft Company and modelled on a Russian prototype. Nine Navy ships and three airplanes are searching for the plane in the Andaman Sea to the south of the capital, Yangon .
Bacsinszky had to deal with her own game, flying dust, Mladenovic and a volatile gallery on Court Philippe Chatrier.
"She kept me on the back foot".
"So probably if I would not be playing a quarter-final of a grand slam, I would probably not have these kind of nightmare issues". We had a sand storm, a hurricane and we nearly had snow too. Did you say to yourself, It's raining, so I will be able to be in the match?
Ostapenko is not looking beyond her clash with Bacsinszky as she revels in an unexpected challenge for the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen.
Facing wind, rain and cold and a crowd cheering her French opponent, the 30th-seeded Swiss player on Tuesday reached the French Open semifinals. Two of the favourites, Simona Halep and Karolina Pliskova, are in quarter-final action on Wednesday as a maiden major and the world top ranking come into view. Ostapenko will be 20 while her Swiss opponent will turn 28. She didn't panic when the experienced Dane took the first set after coping with the blustery conditions much better than Ostapenko, whose flat groundstrokes have little margin for error.
"I had to stay aggressive". "I felt quite confident after we stopped in the third set and I won five games in a row".
"To play semi-final of Roland Garros on your birthday, I think it's really nice".
