Trump said he would "cancel" the deal on the campaign trial and his campaign's energy plan included a pledge to "cancel the Paris climate agreement and stop all payments of USA tax dollars to United Nations global warming programs". Those moves make it unlikely the USA will meet its Paris commitment. But he was also breaking from many of America's staunchest allies, who have expressed alarm about the decision. That means the US could stay in the accord and choose not to hit its goals or stay in the pact but adjust its targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

On Tuesday, Modi said in Berlin that it would be a "crime" to spoil the environment for future generations as the world awaits a decision on US climate policy.

At home, the U.S. Conference of Mayors strongly opposed the decision and said the nation's mayors will continue efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions blamed for global warming.

He had promised during his presidential campaign to pull the U.S. out of the deal.

"Following a successful global tour and the G-7 summit in Italy, president Trump has an opportunity to relieve our nation of the unfair and economically devastating requirements of the Paris Agreement, the United Nations climate treaty he pledged to rip up during the campaign", Cruz wrote in an op-ed in CNN.

Reports of the impending move by the American president triggered statements of support for the climate accord from scores of world leaders.

President Trump however, has sided with the 22 Republican senators who reportedly urged him May 25 via a letter to leave the Paris Climate Change Accord.

Trump spoke from the White House Rose Garden on a warm, sunny day.

A White House official says Trump's expected to withdraw the United States from the landmark agreement.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer insisted that the leaders "get on very well" but, as is often the case, his warm words from the White House podium were overshadowed by the president's tweets.

"We have to understand that if climate change is not addressed, one of the greatest coastal cities on the Earth will be increasingly threatened", he said.

As for the mechanics of withdrawal, worldwide treaties have a four-year cooling off period from the time they go into effect.

Mr Guterres's appeal suggested that if the United States, the world's biggest carbon emitter after China, were to leave the deal, the onus would be on other key players like China, India and the European Union to do more to fight global warming.

Trump faced considerable pressure to hold to the deal during visits with European leaders and Pope Francis on his recent trip overseas.

The Chinese government canceled construction of more than 100 new coal-fired power plants earlier this year, announcing plans to invest at least $360 billion in green-energy projects by 2020.

It is unclear whether Trump has the votes.

So was opposition from environmental groups.

"But even if the government decides to leave the Paris agreement, it's very important for U.S. society as a whole - the cities, the states, the companies, the businesses - to remain engaged", he said.
