The North Carolina Highway Patrol says five people have been killed in a fiery crash that closed a portion of Interstate 95 in both directions.

"We are not sure of the number of fatalities at this time", said Stephanie Chavis, director Robeson County Emergency Management. NCHP troopers indicated that the northbound lanes should open around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. The NC DOT said the interstate is expected to be closed until at least 3 a.m. Steve Abbott of the NC DOT estimated earlier it would be at least midnight before that stretch of 95 reopened. Pictures from Chopper 11 HD showed there were at least 3 tractor-trailer trucks and 3 smaller vehicles involved.

According to troopers, the driver of a tanker truck failed to stop, leading to a chain reaction that involved all the cars.

Indians call up top OF prospect Bradley Zimmer from Triple-A
With a depleted outfield unit, it was only a matter of time before Zimmer and his.294/.371/.532 slash line made it to Cleveland. Zimmer batted.250/.365/.425 with 15 homers, 62 RBI and 38 steals in 130 games past year between Double- and Triple-A.

One tractor-trailer rig tried to avoid the crash by crossing into the northbound lanes, Chavis said. One may have caught fire. The rig crossed the lanes, drove into the bordering trees and caught fire.
