Showcasing Star Trek-like future-set science fiction space series tropes, The Orville will see the creator and occasional actor co-star alongside perennial onscreen femme-fatale Adrianne Palicki. Down on his luck after a bitter divorce, Planetary Union officer ED MERCER (MacFarlane) finally gets his chance to command one of these ships: the U.S.S. Orville.

According to Fox Television Group's co-chair and CEO Dana Walden, the network has brought back no fewer than 17 legacy series, the most in a decade.

A clip of "The Orville" shown at Fox's presentation to advertisers had a distinct tongue-in-cheek "Galaxy Quest" tone. "The Gifted", directed by "X-Men" filmmaker Bryan Singer, centers on a suburban family whose children have mutant powers. The action drama stars Stephen Moyer ("True Blood"), Amy Acker ("Angel"), Sean Teale ("Reign"), Jamie Chung ("Gotham") and Coby Bell ("Burn Notice"). The sitcom about two partners exploring unexplained phenomena in Los Angeles stars Craig Robinson of "The Office" and Adam Scott of "Parks and Recreation".

- "The Resident, a drama starring Matt Czuchry ("The Good Wife") and Emily VanCamp ("Revenge"), will focus on three doctors and a nurse as it reveals "what really happens, both good and bad", at American hospitals".

Pope Francis to canonise children at Fatima shrine
Francisco and Jacinta Marto are the youngest-ever saints who didn't die as martyrs. The late Pope John Paul II was shot by a Turkish gunman on 13 May 1981.

The next season of The X-Files will be held as a mid-season debut.

While the decision to slate only a handful of new shows is partly a function of a weaker-than-usual development season, it also has become increasingly obvious that throwing hundreds of millions of dollars into new shows that can't out-rate the established series is an exercise in diminishing returns. And Angela Bassett has top billing in "9-1-1", a procedural drama about first responders from executive producers Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk.

TUESDAY: 8, Lethal Weapon; 9, The Mick; 9:30, Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Fox's prime-time strategy for next season includes two live musical events, "A Christmas Story" and "Rent".
