Shortly after the auto was revealed for the first time, Alonso was climbing in to take it on its maiden run for many, many laps of the Brickyard. It has been a very helpful day in terms of knowing all this different world and getting up to speed a little bit.

The 35-year-old, racing for the Honda-powered Andretti team branded in McLaren orange, reached average speeds in excess of a 215mph at the 2.5-mile oval circuit. "Because at the moment, we only watch races on television and we saw data on the simulator, which you always are not 100 percent sure if you can trust or not until you test the real auto".

With the most important parts of the day's program completed, Alonso was soon back out on track, testing different trim levels and trying different lines.

He said, too, that he had been learning how to adjust the auto with his in-cockpit tools, as the team started trimming the vehicle out, allowing it to move around.

"So these are the things that we need to hopefully learn in the first days of free practice and, as I said many times, I'm with the best team possible for that".

Over a series of runs of around 10 to 12 laps the two-time world champion was soon up to speed, encountering one minor wobble as he glided through the phases, each time setting consistent times, impressing all who were present including previous Indy 500 winners Mario Andretti and Johnny Rutherford.

IndyCar driver Marco Andretti set up the No. 29 for Andretti Autosport and Alonso ran several laps, moving gradually past the 200 miles per hour threshold to near 210 miles per hour before heading to the pits. "In the best race in the world, you are one of the 33 drivers on the grid, which is on its own just fantastic".

Alonso has 32 wins and 97 podiums in F1, his most recent triumph coming at the 2013 Spanish Grand Prix.

While everything seemed everything fine on the car-testing front, Alonso did encounter a weird incident during testing as he ended up killing two birds that were on the track.

The rookie orientation programme was the first on-track step for Alonso towards securing a place in the 33 vehicle field. "I was able to feel the changes".

Practice for the Indy 500 begins May 15 with qualifying on May 20-21. "Now is the real deal".

A day after preparing in a racing simulator, Alonso said his confidence grew with every lap.

Last year, the ex-Formula One driver won in his first 500 start.
