"The reason why I say that is because I got a chance to play for a first-class organization, and in front of the greatest fans in the history of sports".

Tanaka (5-2) left to jeers with NY trailing 8-0, the most runs he allowed in his major league career. "The house Jeter built", said another, echoing the nickname for the old Yankee Stadium as "The House that Ruth built".

He was also a 14-time All-Star, won five Gold Gloves, was named the World Series MVP in 2000 and AL Rookie of the Year in 2016.

"The Captain" is the franchise's all-time leader in hits, stolen bases and games played.

The former Yankee may have been confident on the field, but as a soon-to-be dad, Derek Jeter's not quite there yet.

Bregman homered just as Jeter was holding a news conference under the stands following the between-games ceremony, which came after the Yankees rallied for an 11-6 win in the opener.

They wore pink-billed caps in honor of Mother's Day.

That said, Jeter, who's model wife, 27, announced her pregnancy in February, plans on taking it day by day.

Connelly: Greens may hold balance of power in tight British Columbia election
While the election has left us unsettled, one thing is clear: B.C. has been and will continue to be a hard place to govern. To which NDP leader John Horgan responded, "A majority of British Columbians voted for a new government".

Announcers Michel Kay and John Sterling emceed the festivities, introducing his whole family with the crowd chanting a familiar roll call of 'De-reck Je-Ter!'

George Springer led off the game with a drive into Monument Park just after Jeter's number was retired there in a pregame ceremony.

Jeter sidestepped a pair of questions about his role in a group headed by former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush that is trying to buy the Miami Marlins.

Some of Jeter's former teammates weren't in attendance for the ceremony, most notably Alex Rodriguez.

Of course, you can't honor a legendary baseball player without giving him a bunch of expensive gifts.

"He wasn't the most talented player both offensively and defensively", Torre said. How can you blame him?

"He's going to be shut down for two weeks and then we'll reassess", Cashman said.

"You know, you play here in NY for 20 years", Jeter said. "Thank you very much".

No matter who was carrying the load on any given night, only one singular voice pierced through to lead those Yankees teams.
