The former president made the first public appearance of his post presidential life last week at the University of Chicago.
The Obama Foundation said it is also exploring ways to incorporate a Chicago Public Library branch on the site.
"It's home, I consider myself a South Sider", Mrs. Obama, who grew up in the city's historically Black area, says in the clip above.
To jumpstart that effort the former president announced he and his wife had donated $2 million to a Chicago summer jobs program with the aim of revitalizing communities that will neighbor his center's campus.
The design includes three buildings, a museum, a forum and the library itself, along with a sprawling public plaza. Earlier this week, the recently founded Obama Foundation released a collaborative "Hometown" playlist on Spotify that includes everyone from Chicago's own Kanye West to Tom Waits.
According to a CNN report, Obama said that the studio would be a place where he "can invite Chance [the Rapper] or Bruce Springsteen, depending on your taste, to come here and talk about how you can record music that has social commentary and meaning".

The attack has sparked a political blame-game over who should take responsibility for the NHS's computer security failures. Ms Rudd said it was not yet known who was behind the attack, but insisted that the NHS had not been deliberately targeted.
"The design approach for the centre is guided by the goal of creating a true community asset that seeks to inspire and empower the public to take on the greatest challenges of our time", said NY firm Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects, which is collaborating with local studio Interactive Design Architects on the project.
In rolling out plans for the presidential center, the former president has said he wants the presidential center to be more than an archive or museum, but also an incubator to affect change locally, nationally and globally.
The goal was to "create an institution that will train the next generation of leadership", Obama told a packed audience.
The Obama Foundation has said nearly half of the exhibition design work for the museum will be performed by minority- and women-owned businesses. Alongside Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel at the South Shore Cultural Center, they'll show off a three-dimensional model of the upcoming complex on the city's South Side.
"We actually think we'll have an opportunity to collaborate with Chicago, and we hope there might be an opportunity to have two centers for the president", said A.J. Halagao, who chaired fundraisers to bring the library to Hawaii, during a 2013 interview.
The center is slated to be complete by 2021.
