To compete, "en Marche" has rebranded itself is now rebranding itself "La Republique en Marche" (Republic on the Move), as it prepares a list of candidates.

"France is America's close ally & good friend", tweeted Senator Marco Rubio, who ran for the Republican presidential nomination past year against Trump.

But it took more than luck for the new French president to accomplish something most students of French politics thought impossible: From scratch, he built his own political party of the center, En Marche!

Marine Le Pen, his far-right opponent in the presidential run-off, quickly conceded defeat to the 39-year-old Macron after voters rejected her "French-first" nationalism by a large margin. And the outcome of that election could dramatically affect how Macron governs the country.

Mr Macron has said he is aiming to secure an absolute majority in the lower chamber through the June 11 and 18 elections.

Emmanuel Macron has won the French presidency, but right now he doesn't have a single seat in Parliament to his name.

Numerous more than 57,000 French nationals in Canada cast ballots Saturday in the run-off election.

However, Laurence Boone of AXA Investment Managers, who like Macron was an economic advisor to outgoing president Francois Hollande, believes Macron has a good chance of building a majority.

It was the first time the men had appeared in public together since Mr Macron resigned in August 2016 as Mr Hollande's economy minister to run for president - a decision that was received coldly by the French leader at the time.

Leaders of the 28-nation European Union, from which Le Pen said she wanted to remove France, were explicitly effusive in their congratulations.
