Trump to meet with Russian foreign minister at White House

Trump's talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at the White House will take place after Lavrov's meetings earlier in the day with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

Russian Federation has signed the agreement along with Iran - its partner in supporting Syrian President Bashar Assad - as well as Turkey, a U.S. North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally that is backing rebels in a six-year civil war against Assad.

Interestingly, the meeting also comes a day after the sacking of Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey, who was spearheading the probe whether the Trump campaign advisers colluded with Moscow to manoeuvre the election outcome.

Mr Colin H Kahl, the former national security adviser to Vice President Joe Biden, took to Twitter to pose what he called a "deadly serious" question: "Was it a good idea to let a Russian gov photographer & all their equipment into the Oval Office?"

As he was entering the Oval Office, a reporter asked whether the dismissal of Comey "cast a shadow" over today's meetings.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson briefly addressed reporters with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on May 10.

"We later learned that the White House - by their own admission - was misled", Brennan said.

"It appears that the President and Secretary Tillerson were more focused on making friends with Minister Lavrov than confronting Putin's envoy on Russia's troubling behavior", Engel said in a statement.

The rest will be from the centrist Modem party or rebels from the Socialists and right-wing Republicans. The result wasn't close - Macron had 64 per cent support with about 90 per cent of votes counted.

Trump seemed to add some credence to the claim when he said during an interview with NBC Thursday that he considered "this Russian Federation thing" before Comey's firing.

U.S intelligence agencies have accused Vladimir Putin's government of meddling in last year's presidential elections to help Trump's chances of victory. "You're kidding", Lavrov told reporters sarcastically before waving his hand dismissively and leaving the room.

Lavrov believes Syria has areas where US might contribute to operation of de-escalation zones, the agreement on which came as a result of the recent round of talks held in Astana. Attorney General Jeff Sessions also recused himself of anything related to the Russian Federation investigation after it came out that he, as a USA senator, had met twice with Kislyak in July and September, interactions he did not disclose when asked at his Senate confirmation hearing this year for the attorney general position.

And the two governments still disagree on Assad's role in last month's chemical gas attack, which left dozens of civilians dead and spurred Trump to retaliate by launching 59 cruise missiles at a Syrian airbase.

Still, Tillerson's meeting provided a blueprint for how the former Cold War foes might go about improving ties. The continued fighting between rebels and Assad's military has complicated USA efforts to defeat IS.

Lavrov was conveying a Russian plan to end the violence, after hashing out an agreement with Iran and Turkey last week.

The Trump administration has cautiously backed the cease-fire, which includes four "de-confliction" or safe zones.

Former White House officials were left to wonder about the security implications of having allowed a Russian photographer unfettered access to the USA president's office. The zones would not cover areas where the US -led coalition is fighting the Islamic State group, but enforcement and other questions remain unanswered.
