My Sri Lanka visit a sign of strong relationship, says PM Modi

Modi will be the Chief Guest at the UN-recognised 14th International Vesak Day meant to mark the enlightenment and passing away of Lord Buddha.

Former President Mahidna Rajapaksa says that he has absolutely no objection to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Sri Lanka.

Sanjay Panda, MEA, said there were no MoUs signed between the two neighbouring nations on the opening day of Prime Minister Modi's visit and the focus of the discussions was Buddhism, promotion of tourism, and enhancing the connectivity between the two nations.

Panda said, India's ties with Sri Lanka have witnessed qualitative transformation in the last few years and both the countries are willing to strengthen and diversify the relationship further.

Thereafter, Modi will attend a private dinner with President of Sri Lanka, Maithripala Sirisena at "Temple Trees", the latter's official residence.

China has already developed the Hambantota port in Sri Lanka and its submarines have been making port calls here, much to the discomfort of India. The Prime Minister will also be inaugurating the 150-bed multi-specialty Dickoya Hospital which has been built with Indian assistance. He said Modi's visit was restricted to the Vesak Day celebration hosted by Colombo. "This time, I will be privileged to pay respect at the revered Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy, also known as the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic", he said.
