The system has angered Beijing, which says its powerful radars allow Washington to spy on its military operations.
In early March, China's foreign minister, Wang Yi, told reporters in Beijing that the US and Korea were en route to a "head-on collision" and that a "looming crisis" was taking form on the peninsula.
"I take this office empty-handed, and I will leave the office empty-handed", Mr Moon said.
Choi Jong Kun, Mr Moon's foreign policy adviser, continued: "While doing it, he will consult with the United States, as well as China".
"Politics were turbulent (in the past several months), but our people showed greatness, " he said.
"I liked the no-frills inauguration event and his down-to-earth style", said Lee Jeong-Mi, a Seoul office worker who watched him pass by.
"China is willing to work with South Korea to maintain the hard-earned outcome of China-ROK relations", Xi said.
The phrasing is Beijing's diplomatic code for acceptance of its stance.

China has pressured South Korea both economically and politically to abandon THAAD, which Beijing argues poses a threat to China's national security. Moon also has questioned the deployment of a USA missile defense system the last government rushed into service.
During Thursday's call, Xi reaffirmed China's opposition to the THAAD deployment, Moon's office said.
The progressive politician's statement on a more conciliatory approach to North Korea relations drew concerns from the analyst community and could generate friction with U.S. North Korea hard-liners, The Guardian reported. However, it's unclear what kind of missile China tested.
Japanese officials have described the call as "positive and meaningful", with the two agreeing to cooperate closely to deal with North Korea.
In one of his first acts as president, Mr Moon spoke by telephone with Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Lee Sun-jin.
But the White House statement was a little broader in scope and made no specific mention of the DPRK, instead highlighting the strength of the alliance between the two countries and extending a formal invite for Moon to visit Washington.
Moon's Democratic Party said he was briefed on the status of the North Korean military and South Korea's military readiness.The White House also congratulated Moon, saying it looked forward to working with him to strengthen their longstanding alliance.Moon must also try to mend a society badly bruised by the corruption scandal that doomed Park's administration.His party lacks a majority in a divided parliament. It swept him to power, but leaves the country bitterly divided.
The frontrunner is set to win 41.4 per cent of the vote, defeating his conservative challenger Hong Joon-pyo at 23.3 per cent, according to the exit polls by TV stations.
