David Moyes has claimed that questions over his future at Sunderland are not for now as the Black Cats' relegation from the Premier League was confirmed on Saturday.
Barnes struck after just eight minutes and Tom Heaton kept Palace at bay before substitute Gray hit a late second to ensure the Clarets finally registered their first success on the road this season.
Southampton won a penalty at St Mary's in the closing stages which, if converted, would have seen Sunderland survive for now but Eldin Jakupovic saved from Dusan Tadic.
Sunderland have flirted with relegation in two of the three previous seasons and his own prediction in August that Sunderland were in a relegation fight has come back to haunt boss David Moyes.
"We have come back a few times with some great fightbacks but weren't able to do it this season", the Republic of Ireland worldwide said.
A awful (at best) defense led to Sunderland's struggles under Moyes, a man in whom the owners hoped could bring success back to the club.
Sunderland have been in the Premier League since 2007, but their return to the second-tier Championship has long appeared only a matter of time. It's obviously disappointing, but it's a chance for the club to take stock of everything and bounce back and give the fans what they want: "Premier League football".
Passengers get into fistfight aboard Southwest flight
Southwest Airlines told CNN that the other man suffered minor injuries but was able to continue traveling to his destination. Of the flight attendant, Green said: "She was being pummeled at the same time as the other guy was being pummeled".
"We had massive disruption during the summer transfer window, and an unprecedented number of injuries throughout the season".
"This is my worst day in football", said Moyes. "These are difficulties which we have been unable to overcome and we are paying the price for that now", said Short. Little wonder when the club also recorded a loss of 33 million pounds ($43 million) in the last financial year, with a debt of 110 million pounds ($142 million).
Moyes refused to apportion blame for the club's drop into the Championship and the disappointed Scot said it was too soon to decide if he would stay in charge for next season.
Bournemouth laid siege to the Sunderland goal in the early minutes, with Steve Cook denied a tap-in by a crucial defensive block before King shot tamely at Jordan Pickford.
In the bottom three since September 10, bottom of the table Sunderland have gone 10 games without a win and are doomed with four games still to play. "But it's an unforgiving league and small margins decide every game".
"When you come into a job, you use the word rebuilding - and I don't think anybody should be changing that word now".
