Police Chief Jonathon Haber told reporters he couldn't specify what policies were violated because Oliver can appeal his firing. The department has completed its internal review and leaves Oliver's potential prosecution up to Dallas County investigators.

"You have my assurances that my department will continue to be responsive, transparent and accountable", Chief Haber said.

The police department, which originally misstated key aspects of the story, said officers responded to a 911 call about "drunken young people", entered a house party, heard gunshots outside, exited the residence to investigate, issued verbal commands toward a auto leaving the scene, and then Oliver fired his rifle into the vehicle, striking Edwards.

Police issued a statement Sunday, saying the vehicle carrying Edwards was backing up toward officers "in an aggressive manner".

Lee Merritt, an attorney for Edwards' family said one of his brothers was held by police overnight, but police said later he was only held as a witness for questioning. The family said they "fully expect an equivalent response from those responsible for investigating and punishing the crime".

Haber fired Oliver Tuesday for violating department procedures, although he refused to elaborate on which procedure the officer violated. Next Generation Action Network head Dominique Alexander honored the family's request canceling a planned protest at Balch Spring police headquarters that was scheduled for Wednesday.

Edwards' killing has prompted calls for the release of body camera footage depicting the incident.

Oliver and other officers were responding to a 911 call over "underage kids drunk walking around", and wrongly assumed those were the kids in the auto.

At the time of the shooting, the department released a statement describing the shooting, claiming the auto Jordan was in moved "aggressively" towards the officer who was responding to a call about intoxicated minors at the party. While inside the house trying to locate the homeowners, police heard gunshots outside.

"Officers confronted a vehicle backing down the street", the revised account says, but, despite officer commands, the auto did not stop. As officers approached the vehicle, police say it began to drive away. Oliver fired an unknown number of rounds from a rifle into the moving vehicle, striking 15-year-old Jordan Edwards. He was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead. Neither officer was injured.

The party began in 1972 as a fringe, extremist group; for years, it was ignored or boycotted by much of the rest of the country. It may have been a unusual way for a beaten presidential hopeful to spend the night, but this party has long-term plans.

The police chief has repeatedly offered his condolences to the family.

The family later said that while they are grateful that Oliver has been fired, "there remains a long road ahead".

It is clear that Edwards' loving family wants to achieve justice for their son, whom they described as "a loving child, with a humble and sharing spirit".

Jordan's 16-year-old brother and others were detained and questioned, but the boys were not arrested nor charged, Merritt said.

"It is also imperative that we aggressively pursue these two separate investigations to preserve the trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve".

The Texas cop who shot and killed a black high school freshman has been fired.

The officer fired three shots into the vehicle, Edwards family lawyer Lee Merritt told CNN, based on eyewitness accounts from the other boys in the auto.

The department immediately turned over its investigation into the incident to the Dallas County Sheriff's Department.

The Dallas County District Attorney's Office's Public Integrity Unit includes a specialized group of experienced attorneys and investigators. While no criminal charges have been filed yet against Oliver, the District Attorney's office is now in the process of determining whether or not charges will be filed in the case.

"What we desire only second to having our beloved Jordan back, is Justice for Jordan", the family's statement said.
