India upholds death sentence for four men who gang raped student

The nation's top court yesterday rejected a plea challenging the death penalty given to Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur and Pawan Gupta by the Delhi High Court, and decided they would be hanged till death.

Media reports said a round of applause went up in court as the judgement was read out yesterday at the end of an appeal hearing that began previous year.

The case sent a "tsunami of shock" all over, the apex court said, adding that the convicts treated the victim as an object of enjoyment. She was thrown out of the bus -so grievously injured that her insides were spilling out - along with her male friend near the airport.

The victim's father said he was happy with the judgment and demanded that the murderers be hanged quickly.

In the same vein, Prof Sadhna Singh of DG Girls' College stated that this decision of the Supreme Court would desist people of perverted mindset from committing such crimes.

The court held that the diabolical nature of the crime in the Indian capital, which triggered massive protests across the country, made it a fit case for the death penalty.

"What about justice for others whose cases are pending in courts", Mr Singh asked. The convicts, they said, also tried to run over the woman and her friend after dumping them on a road, naked and bleeding. Jyoti's mother Asha Devi thanked everyone for the support and targeting politicians said "I have never heard any politician say anything positive about women". Ram Singh who was one the six accused hanged himself in prison, while another who was a juvenile was sent to reform home in August previous year.

A trial court had sentenced the four to death in 2013, an order the high court had confirmed.

She had died in a Singapore hospital on December 29 that year. "This is not the first time that death sentence has been given to criminals", she said.

Police and security guards must be posted at dark and lonely places like parks, streets etc., mobile apps for immediate assistance of women should be introduced and effectively maintained, she said.
