After Trevor Bauer and Corey Kluber lasted a combined seven innings in the first two games of the Indians' four-game series against Detroit, Carlos Carrasco gave them what they needed on Wednesday night at Comerica Park. Kluber was removed from Tuesday night's start at Detroit after three innings because of back discomfort.
This season, Kluber is 3-2 with a 5.06 earned-run average over 37 1/3 innings with 41 strikeouts and 123 walks. Through six starts, Kluber's ERA is now sitting at 5.06.
Astros 8, Rangers 7 • Marwin Gonzalez hit two home runs, including a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning that rallied Houston over visiting Texas. It was Cabrera's sixth career homer off Kluber.
Avila's single later in the inning drove in Justin Upton and gave the Tigers a four-run lead. "It's a little easier when you're telling them they're being sent down because Miguel Cabrera is coming off the DL", Ausmus said.
Now, the Mets face the challenge of turning their season around without the 24-year-old, who is 1-2 with a 3.29 ERA in five starts.
Nationals 2, Diamondbacks 1: In Washington, Ryan Zimmerman had two hits and doubled in the go-ahead run, Jacob Turner worked four innings of scoreless relief and the Washington Nationals beat the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Yankees-Cubs heading to 17th inning
Before Hicks scampered home with the winning run, the biggest highlight of extra innings belonged to Cubs slugger Kyle Schwarber . Relievers Hector Rondon and Felix Pena did not pitch, so it might behoove starter Jake Arrieta to pitch deep Monday night.
"I thought he did a great job, especially under the circumstances", said manager Terry Francona. "We kept telling him, 'Hey, you look OK'".
The 34.1 innings of work in the postseason may or may not be the cause for Kluber's back problem.

"I felt really good out there, but I wish I could have the pitch to Ramirez back", Boyd said.
Michael Fulmer, who was scheduled to start Thursday, will instead take the mound Friday in Oakland. Last season, they lost their first 11 games to Cleveland and finished the season series at 4-14 - the main reason they missed a wild-card berth on the season's final weekend.
