Arsenal sink United to revive top-four bid, Liverpool held

Arsenal are probably having their worst ever season under Arsene Wenger. The pair clashed during the first half after the Arsenal manager complained to the official about a tackle from Wayne Rooney on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Cross-town rival Manchester United had the chance to close the gap on City and Liverpool but lost 2-0 at Arsenal to end its 25-match unbeaten run.

Eight changes to United's starting line-up at the Emirates Stadium certainly pointed to Mourinho's focus on Thursday's semi-final at home to Celta Vigo, where they hold a 1-0 advantage from the first leg. "It's impossible", Mourinho said.

"It's between two teams, and at the end of the day that's what I make of it".

"Go with everything at Tottenham and it's hard".

He wrote: "Thank you very much for your messages of support after the defeat, and also for your support during the weeks of my recovery". Then we play Southampton and Palace.

"Yes is all on the Europa league", said Mourinho, "but you can not say we did not try to win".

Liverpool are third in the table on 70 points, a point clear of fourth-placed Manchester City, who have a game in hand. Mourinho was rather more theatrical on the subject of his first competitive defeat against Wenger.

"Finally, I leave this stadium with Arsenal fans happy", he added. They were walking the streets with heads low.

"It's a big club". You think I enjoy a big club like Arsenal not winning big trophies? I don't enjoy it.

"I felt that going in at half-time at 0-0 we would have a good chance to win the game".

Both the managers briefly shook hands after the completion of the match.

"Normal is win, lose, draw". I really don't care about it [the record against Wenger].

The match came alive on 54 minutes when Xhaka's speculative long range shot deflected off Andrea Herrera and dipped over De Gea.

"We needed to be patient", he said of Sunday's game. "The first goal was quite lucky and the second goal was a great goal". I am happy for him.

"It is good to have the opportunity to play - the manager gives you a job and you have to show he can trust you for future games".

"We have a big game on Wednesday". If we do that, I'm convinced that we can achieve what we want now.

Taking it further, Mourinho didn't relent on his jibe.

"The game was under control".

Arsenal's next match sees them travels to St. Mary's, to face a robust Southampton side.
