French Socialist minister Vallaud Belkacem went further to say that Macron would be a weak president, and that the French people voted for him by default.

Macron now becomes not only France's youngest-ever president but also one of its most unlikely.

"France will be at the forefront of the fight against terrorism", he said. "Macron gives Europe a huge hope".

Fear of Le Pen drove many voters to Macron.

The two rounds mean her opponents were always likely to gang up against her, as they have done in the second round of regional and parliamentary elections to great success in recent years.

Speaking after the projection was announced, Macron hailed "a new hopeful and confident chapter" for France, the broadcaster France 24 reported.

The outcome will help restore some of the EU's self-confidence after it was battered by Britain's decision to leave the bloc past year.

The White House released a separate statement congratulating Macron as well.

Before the first round of the election last month, Trump said a deadly attack against a police officer in Paris would have a "big effect" on the vote and he praised Le Pen on immigration, calling her "the strongest on what's been going on in France".

He said that a new page was being turned in French history. Left-wing voters in particular felt disenfranchised by the choice of the final two candidates.

Her first round score of 21 percent was seen as a failure of Marine Le Pen's strategy to widen her appeal.

Several American politicians also praised Macron for his victory via Twitter.

One of the selling points for Durant for signing with the Warriors last summer was the refreshing unselfishness of the main stars. On the other hand, the Jazz got solid contributions from Gordon Hayward and Rudy Gobert, but it still doesn't seem to be enough.

"His large victory confirms that a very large majority of our citizens wanted to assemble around the values of the Republic and mark their attachment to the European Union as well as to the openness of France in the world", Hollande said. Macron has pledged to strengthen the euro, cut taxes on business and kick-start competitiveness by allowing more company flexibility and by inviting top scientists to relocate to France.

The Front National candidate called Mr Macron shortly after 7pm BST to concede defeat. "In the French system, if he doesn't have a majority he'd have only limited power, he'd become a constitutional monarch".

Hundreds of thousands of emails and documents stolen from the Macron campaign were dumped online and then spread by anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks, leading the candidate to call it an attempt at "democratic destabilisation".

It won't be his first experience in the challenge of reforming France.

One of his most risky opponents, conservative former Prime Minister Francois Fillon, was hobbled by allegations that his family benefited from cushy taxpayer-funded jobs for years. As a result, his camp has accused President Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin of interfering with the election.

The far-right's Marine Le Pen had hoped to clinch the presidency with a campaign which capitalised on disillusion with the French political elite. Many of these leaders, including Le Pen, have played on ethno-nationalist sentiment, declaring they would implement laws targeting immigrants and Muslims. For much of its existence, the party was treated as a political pariah.

"I will propose to start this deep transformation of our movement in order to make a new political force", she added, as cited by Reuters.

On foreign policy, Macron has already signalled his desire to work more closely with Merkel on bolstering the foundations of the European Union as the United Kingdom prepares to leave.

The campaign was roiled by the hacking of Macron's campaign database. Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni tweeted.

The British prime minister Theresa May warmly congratulated Mr. Macron on his presidential win, adding in a statement that the United Kingdom.

Macron is now the only elected representative of the En Marche! party he founded. With at least five political formations contesting all 577 seats, a hung parliament could emerge. About 25 percent of the electorate are predicted to have abstained in the runoff.

Mr Macron will face a battle to win over those who longed for the far-right to shake up French politics. While his win is clear good news for Europe, "populism definitely hasn't gone away".
