"Happy Days" star Erin Moran "likely" died of cancer, say authorities

In a joint statement from Harrison County's Sheriff's Department and Coroner's Office in IN, officials said that Moran likely died from cancer-related complications.

'Happy Days' star Erin Moran was reportedly forced to rely on a feeding tube in the last days of her life before succumbing to stage 4 cancer.

Police in Harrison County, Indiana said that she had been found unresponsive Saturday after authorities received a 911 call. An autopsy revealed she likely died from complications of stage 4 cancer.

Standard toxicology tests were performed and the results are pending, the statement said, but no illegal narcotics were found at Moran's residence. She played the role on Happy Days until 1982, when she and Scott Baio's character, Chachi Arcola, left to star in the spinoff Joanie Loves Chachi.

"May people remember Eric for her contagious smile, warm heart, and animal loving soul", her "Joanie Love Chachi" co-star Scott Baio tweeted on Sunday.

The actress told the Xfinity TV Blog in 2009 that she was working on an autobiography titled "Happy Days, Depressing Nights". Moran played the younger sister of star Ron Howard, and over the course of Happy Days' run, grew up on national television.

There were reports that she was either homeless at the time of her death or that she had been living in an in trailer park.

In 2011, Ms. Moran and several other former "Happy Days" actors sued CBS, saying they were owed money for merchandising related to the show. She returned for the final season after Joanie Loves Chachi was over.

In a message posted to the organisation's Facebook page, he said: "I am proud of our efforts over the years to help Erin Moran whose troubles were many and complex".

Baio was met with some criticism after his remarks and the announcement of the official cause of death. "RIP Erin", Howard wrote on Twitter.
