Sanctuary City mayors fire back at DOJ over criticism

WASHINGTON, D.C. (CBS)- Sanctuary cities are at risk of losing federal money if they fail to comply with federal immigration laws. "After a raid captured 11 MS-13 members on charges including murder, extortion and drug trafficking, city officials seemed more concerned with reassuring illegal immigrants that the raid was unrelated to immigration than with warning other MS-13 members that they were next", said the DOJ release.

Sessions clarified Sunday he meant no disrespect to the police department but believes if NY wants to be even safer it should get rid of sanctuary city policies that prevent police from turning over low-level offenders to federal agents for deportation.

The Justice Department has given the nine sanctuary jurisdictions until June 30 to act in accordance with the law. New York City continues to see gang murder after gang murder, the predictable effect of the city's "soft on crime" stance. This good police commissioner is not soft on crime.

In a statement and on Twitter, de Blasio challenged President Donald Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions to come to the city "and look our officers in the eye and tell them they are soft on crime". Alliance San Diego and other organizations asked residents who live in border communities what they need from the current administration. Cook County, Illinois, also received a warning, even though it did not get money from the Justice Department past year.

President Donald Trump has vowed to strip federal funds from dozens of state and local governments that do not fully cooperate with USA immigration agents, arguing they endanger public safety when they decline to hand over for deportation illegal immigrants who are arrested for crimes.

Oil prices decline on glut concerns
Crude oil sold for over $100 a barrel in the summer of 2014, before bottoming out below $30 a barrel in January 2016. This brings its output close to the world's top two producers, Saudi Arabia and Russian Federation .

Each letter was worded similarly and signed by Alan R. Hanson, the acting director of the Office of Justice Programs, which administers the Byrne law enforcement grant program, the federal government's top source of justice funding for local jurisdictions.

Sessions talked a lot about the connection between violent street gangs and the "lax immigration policies" that allow some people to remain in the country, even when they could be deported. "New York City continues to see gang murder after gang murder, the predictable effect of the city's "soft on crime" stance". New Orleans has used Justice Department funding to pay for testing DNA kits, police body cameras, attorneys for domestic violence victims and other expenses. For example, according to the Justice Department, the city of NY received a $4.3 million grant in 2016.

"We don't think there's a problem", he said. That enforced a hard deadline on a policy first put in place under the Obama administration, which announced the policy last July but gave cities not in compliance time to adjust.

Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele said that community is hardly succumbing to violence.
