After seeing a photo of Tad Cummins in an Amber Alert, Barry said he made the connection and called authorities.
It wasn't until Thursday that the two were seen again in Cecilville, Calif., where Cummins was arrested. The teacher claimed that they were recently married, had lost everything in a house fire, and that he was 44 and she was 22.
But Cummins was notably controlling and suspicious when it came to Thomas, Barry said. Cummins said they were running out of gas, food and money and they needed a place to stay, Barry told "GMA". Then, when he looked at the vehicle, he noticed it didn't have a license plate.
Cecilville is a remote area with little to no cell phone service in Siskiyou County.
Upon his arrest, Cummin told police, "I'm glad this is over".
He phoned police, who surrounded the cabin early Thursday morning. When Cummins left the cabin, investigators were there to arrest him, the cabin's owner, Monk O'Hare, told CNN.
Tad Cummins was expected to be in the Siskiyou Superior Court on Friday, but early Friday morning Federal Bureau of Investigation agents took custody of Cummins and transported him to Sacramento. Further, the employee said that Cummins had asked directions to WalMart. Elizabeth was walking behind him and was detained. "Now begins another hard chapter, but for now, we celebrate".
The school's investigative files provided to the AP by the attorney show that both Cummins and the girl denied kissing.
Messi's 500th Barca Goal Sinks Real Madrid in Thriller
Madrid captain Sergio Ramos was sent off for a two-footed lunge on Messi in the 77th minute and that left Barcelona in a strong position.
After that, the trail appears to have gone cold.
The two vanished from Columbia, Tennessee, on March 13. "Tad was armed and risky, and he befriended Tad to find out information and notified law enforcement". Two loaded handguns were recovered at the cabin, along with personal items belonging to the pair.
Cummins spent the night in jail before FBI agents whisked him away to Sacramento, where he faces federal charges of crossing state lines with intent to have sexual relations with a minor.
He could get a minimum of 10 years in the slammer on the federal charges alone.
The father of a 15-year-old Tennessee girl who was found in northern California with a teacher after being missing for more than a month says he thinks his daughter was brainwashed.
Jason Whatley, a lawyer for the girl's family, said: "The family is absolutely elated beyond words that this part of the ordeal is coming to an end". "Her mood was very alternating", Gilley said. "We have mental health people that are engaged actively in this case that are going to be working with her for her best interests". But that's kind of speculative, but she was emotional at times, sometimes stoic. "Everybody was hoping for the best, and the best is what we got".
Fact: Law enforcement officials have never said or alluded to the fact that the 15-year-old may be pregnant. She said they can all finally sleep again.
