The Serbian is the top seed left in the tournament following world number one Andy Murray's shock defeat to Albert Ramos-Vinolas earlier on Thursday.

Andy Murray is out of the Monte-Carlo Masters after a three-set defeat to Spain's Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the third round.

Ramos will next face Marin Cilic in the last 8, after the Croatian overcame 9th seed Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 6-2, 7-6 in the day' other match.

The Spaniard, taking part in his fifth clay court tournament this year, will now face the victor of the match between Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas and Frenchman Lucas Pouille. He set up a match point with an excellent backhand cross-court victor as he retrieved a shot deep into the court, and clinched victory on his first opportunity when Muller hit a forehand wide. "I played more aggressive, I played with a very high intensity from the beginning", Nadal said.

It was Ramos-Vinolas' first career victory over a reigning world No. 1 in four attempts and sent him into his first career Masters quarterfinal in his 31st Masters 1000 tournament appearance.

Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka walks off the court after losing the third round match against Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas during the Monte Carlo Tennis Masters tournament in Monaco, Thursday, April, 20, 2017.

No 4 Nadal takes on No 14 Alexander Zverev, and Djokovic plays No 13 Pablo Carreno Busta. "I should have been able to do enough to weather that storm a little bit and finish the match off".

It might have been different had the Spaniard capitalised after winning a long game to break the Edmund serve for 2-1. Goffin saved two sets points on his serve at 5-3 down, but Djokovic held easily on his next service game to level the match.

In another fascinating match, Dominic Thiem, seeded sixth, was eventually beaten by Belgium's David Goffin.

In a match between powerful hitters, Cilic was serving for victory at 5-4.

Pouille reached the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open and Wimbledon a year ago in his breakthrough season.

It happened last fall, in the midst of a fast and furious run, when Murray blazed his way through the home stretch of the season to become second-oldest man, at 29, to debut at No. 1. I normally beat guys by maneuvering them around the court, rather than blasting them off the court.
