The news that former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez was found dead in his jail cell in an apparent suicide marks the final dramatic moment in a life filled with high-profile court cases. He was 27 years old.

In Connecticut, where Hernandez was raised, friends were in shock and grieving.

But his father, the man who kept the 16-year-old anchored, died in 2006 from complications after a routine hernia surgery.

According to a 2009 USA Today story, Hernandez's world was shattered.

"I don't think there was another family that was more familiar in Bristol", Bob Montgomery, who covers high school sports for the Bristol Press, told CNN. When that happened, who do I talk to, who do I hang with?

Prosecutors say Lloyd was last seen the morning of his murder with Hernandez and Hernandez's two associates, Carlos Ortiz and Ernest Wallace, around 2:30 a.m.in a rented silver Nissan Altima. He wasn't the same kid, the way he spoke to me.

- November 6, 1989: Hernandez is born in Bristol, Conn.

State Department of Correction spokesman Christopher Fallon said in a statement that he was not aware a suicide note had been written and that officials had not been concerned that Hernandez would take his life. No charges were filed against Hernandez in the case.

Hernandez was also suspended at least once for marijuana, an issue that would follow him as he entered the draft his junior year.

The former New England Patriots player was found hanged in his prison cell Wednesday.

He was selected by the Patriots in the fourth round.

Hernandez played for the Patriots for three seasons, showing what many considered to be Hall of Fame-worthy talent.

In 38 games with the Patriots, Hernandez finished with 175 catches for 1,956 yards and 18 touchdowns. Prosecutors said he gunned them down after one of them accidentally spilled a drink on him in a nightclub.

- August 27, 2012: Hernandez signs a five-year, $40 million contract with the Patriots. Bradley later testified against Hernandez in both of his murder trials. Lloyd was dating Sha. "It just doesn't add up".

Between 3:23 and 3:27 a.m., workers nearby reported hearing gunshots. At 3:29 a.m., a camera showed an Altima pulling into Hernandez's driveway, which was about a half-mile away.

Three people got out of the auto, and Lloyd was not one of them.

Lloyd was shot and killed.

Hernandez's father constantly pushed his son, requiring him to practice for hours before he could go out with friends.

Authorities say Hernandez was found hanging in his MA prison cell early Wednesday and was pronounced dead at a hospital.

- May 15, 2014: Hernandez is indicted on two counts of first-degree murder and other charges in connection with the shootings of de Abreu and Furtado.

In 2013, less than a year after signing that lucrative new deal, Hernandez was arrested and charged with Lloyd's murder.

April 14: Hernandez was found not guilty of first-degree murder in the double murder in Boston.

"Absolutely no chance he took his own life", tweeted Brian Murphy, the president of Athletes First, which represented Hernandez during his football career.
