Alabama Governor Robert Bentley Quits Over Sex Scandal, Kay Ivey Replaces Him

Ivey spent most of the day getting acclimated to her new position, and she terminated some others from theirs.

The Alabama Ethics Commission last week found Bentley probably violated ethics and campaign finance laws after it completed an investigation into allegations that he used public funds to hide his relationship with Rebekah Mason, a senior adviser who later resigned.

The status of Ivey's cabinet remains unknown.

By the time Ivey, now 72, first won elected office-state treasurer in 2002-she'd switched her political affiliation to the Republican party.

The report also detailed what allegedly went on behind closed doors when Mason, according to the report, left the office "with her hair tousled and her clothing in disarray".

Dianne Bentley saw her divorce from the governor made final a year ago, but only after she surreptitiously recorded her husband telling Mason he loved her and enjoyed putting his hands under her shirt.

The House committee's investigation into the governor's misdeeds came to a halt in November when then-state Attorney General Luther Strange asked that his office be able to take over "related work".
