Melinda Bates, the director of the White House Visitors Office under President Bill Clinton, told CNN it is "the single most high-profile event that takes place at the White House each year, and the White House and the first lady are judged on how well they put it on".
"This is the 139th Easter Egg Roll". The first lady's spokeswoman said she wanted to focus on the more traditional aspects of the longtime Easter Egg Roll. "We're right on track".
During a brief speech on the White House's Truman Balcony, Trump thanked those in attendance and remarked how the tradition "began a long time ago" in 1878.
The president later walked the rope line to greet families. First Lady Melania Trump has not yet moved to Washington, DC. "So thank you, everybody, for being here", Trump said.
