Thanks in large measure to China, Fate of the Furious opened to a record-breaking $432.2 million internationally and $532.2 million globally, eclipsing the $529 million debut of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The Force Awakens, meanwhile, wasn't released in China until January 9, 2016, roughly three weeks after it premiered in places like the United States and UK in 2015.

The film is the eighth instalment of Fast and the Furious franchise.

"Fate" also broke box office records for bringing in the biggest worldwide opening in movie history.

The Universal film earned an astonishing $190 million from Friday to Sunday, according to early local estimates, proving that the Vin Diesel-starring action franchise remains a singular phenomenon in the world's most populous nation.

While the latest "Fast" opened strongly, the manic muscle-car-filled film - with megastars Vin Diesel and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson - made almost a third less in its first weekend than the previous "Fast and Furious" chapter, which scored $147.2 million. Here, the previous record holder was "Jurassic World" with $316.7 million collection at the opening day.

The actress revealed that she had told her family she was doing "an indie movie in Canada"-such has been the secrecy surrounding the film".

The cast for Fast 8 includes Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Elsa Pataky, Kurt Russell, Charlize Theron, Scott Eastwood and, Helen Mirren. Furious 7 opened in China and Russian Federation after the initial release. Fate of the Furious' opening weekend in China accounts for the majority of its global revenue. Given Walker's key role, it might have made more sense for the franchise to cap its run at seven films, as the previous movie made for a fitting emotional ending to the series.

The "Fast and the Furious" is a global juggernaut for Universal Pictures.

"It is a franchise that has adapted and changed over the years and is as relevant in 2017 as it was in 2001", noted Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for comScore.

Furious 8 played to audiences of all ethnicity's garnering an A CinemaScore.

Meanwhile, Beauty and the Beast's long legs continue carrying the film past the $1 billion mark at the global box office.
