Samsung Galaxy S8 won't launch with Bixby Voice feature

Bad news for those interested in testing out Bixby voice assistant with the Samsung Galaxy S8 later this month: It won't be immediately available.

While us Brits had already been told full support for the company's new Siri-rivalling digital assistant Bixby would not be available at launch, users in the USA and Samsung's native Korea had been promised full day-one access.

However, the voice activation capability, the headline feature of Samsung's rival to Apple's Siri, Amazon's Alexa, Microsoft's Cortana and Google's Assistant, won't be available in the USA until "later this spring". According to The Wall Street Journal, Samsung will not launch the Galaxy S8 and S8+ with Bixby due to certain performance issues discovered in the past few weeks. This includes Bixby Vision which allows users to identify objects the camera is pointing at, Bixby Reminder and Bixby Home.

The delayed release date of the full version of Bixby represents the mad dash that Samsung made to be able to prepare a digital assistant that will launch alongside the Samsung Galaxy S8, after the company acquired Viv Labs in October of a year ago. Bixby was built on technology that was acquired from Viv, an AI virtual assistant created by some of the same people who originally built Siri. Samsung plans to add Bixby Voice support to the GS8 "later this spring". It was dubbed as one of the most exciting features on the Galaxy S8, giving competition to Apple's Siri, Microsoft's Cortana, Amazon's Alexa, and Google Assistant.

Samsung produced 80.1 million units of smartphones in the first quarter and accounted for 26.1 percent of the global smartphone market as the #1 player in the global market. Instead, those features will be turned on later via a software update from Samsung.

Samsung confirmed last month that Bixby won't be available in the United Kingdom at launch anyway, noting that the Bixby button on the side of the S8 will act as a launcher for Bixby Home until the assistant becomes available.

Samsung told Express.co.uk that the feature will be pushed-out to UK Galaxy S8 owners later this year.
