"Being able to test self-driving cars in California is nothing new, as many companies have permits in the state".
California's DMV disclosed the permit on its website, which lists several dozen other companies that are testing self-driving technology.
Why this matters: This is the first indication we've seen in a while that Apple's super-secret Project Titan is still in the pipeline.
As of today, Apple Inc. joins the list of 30 companies that the California DMV has issued testing permits to for autonomous vehicles to be driven on public roads.
Apple, of course, is no exception to this trend, and the latest evidence from Cupertino, California indicates that they're about to make another radical leap from their origins in computers.
Among the list of permitted companies is also ride-sharing company Uber, who carried out autonomous testing without a permit in California past year.

Despite major staffing shakeups in its autonomous driving project a year ago, Apple is reportedly gearing up to unleash cars equipped with its driverless technology on California's public streets. Nothing further was reported on that deal, and Apple had just two months before hired Dan Dodge, the founder and former CEO of QNX, a software company that specializes in "microkernel" operating systems and integrated driving and info-tainment systems which are used in multiple high-end vehicle brands including Audi, Jaguar, and Mercedez Benz.
An Apple spokesman declined to comment directly on the filing, pointing back to a statement when the company submitted its comments to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration late past year.
Asked for comment on Friday's developments, an Apple spokesperson referred back to the company's December statement regarding the statements given to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
"These rules expand our existing autonomous vehicle testing program to include testing vehicles where no driver is present", said DMV Director Jean Shiomoto.
General Motors this week announced that its autonomous driving efforts, investing $14 million and adding 1,100 jobs in a new research center in San Francisco.
Because the company hasn't built the electric auto it originally wanted to, the tech will be tested in existing cars.
