"We can't continue to allow China to rape our country", Mr. Trump the candidate told supporters in May 2016, lambasting the trade deficit and blaming millions of lost jobs on artificially cheap Chinese imports dumped in the United States. As you know, very few people expected that.
Chinese media enthusiastically cheered the Xi-Trump meeting. Trump sent 59 missiles to strike a Syrian airfield from which Americans believe the attack originated shortly after footage of the civilian casualties came out. "That's the approach I thought Trump would take, and I'm disappointed he's not". Having created an opportunity to address concerns while standing next to China's leader - never an easy task for American leaders and diplomats - Mr. Trump blinked. The Chinese Communist Party veterans must be marvelling at Trump's dialectical mind. In the same interview, he said his administration wouldn't formally accuse the country of manipulating its currency to gain a trade advantage, retreating from a core campaign promise.
"He paused for 10 seconds", Trump continued, "and then he asked the interpreter to please say it again". That's what Trump gave them. Xi emphasized: "China adheres to the goal of denuclearization of the peninsula and insists on preserving peace and stability on the peninsula". Indeed, according to a White House pool report on Wednesday, a senior Trump official has been quoted as saying that China's abstention on Wednesday in the UN Security Council vote on a draft resolution on Syria sponsored by the western powers - in a major departure from its vetoing of similar attempts in the past to pillory Damascus - is due to the "important relationship" forged between Trump and Xi.

In the runup to last week's summit, he talked about how "difficult" his first meeting with Xi would be, even threatening unilateral action against North Korea if China wouldn't help. We should stop pretending otherwise.
