A joint news conference between Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, and Tillerson showed how much work there is to do though as the Russian used many of his speaking opportunities to lambast Washington over its actions in Syria and what he said was its unhelpful foreign interference in the past. They agreed that North Korea has to be de-nuclearized and that the civil war in Syria must be addressed in an "orderly" way.

"The world's two foremost nuclear powers can not have this sort of relationship". President Trump put it more bluntly.

As US secretary of state Rex Tillerson held extended meetings with both Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov and the country's president Vladimir Putin in Moscow, Mr Lavrov accused the US government of undertaking an "illegal attack against Syria" and criticised Washington's "confusing and sometimes openly contradictory ideas on the entire range of bilateral and worldwide issues".

The strike has set off a fierce disagreement between the USA and Russia, Syria's main ally in the region in its ongoing civil war.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson battled to overcome differences with his Russian counterpart on Wednesday. The diplomats know each other well from Mr Tillerson's days as Exxon Mobil chief executive. Mr Putin had even granted Mr Tillerson a friendship honour.

Unlike he has done with previous secretaries of state, Putin didn't keep Tillerson waiting for hours on Wednesday.

Moscow has strenuously objected to Trump's decision to launch 59 U.S. Tomahawk missiles at a Syrian air base that the U.S. says was used to pummel civilians with nerve gas, resulting in 87 deaths. They weren't authorized to discuss diplomatic conversations publicly and requested anonymity.

The meeting agenda wasn't announced.

"To Assad and the Syrian government: you have no friends in the world after your terrible actions". Putin has spoken of having proof that it was a "false flag" operation meant to rally global opposition to Assad. Nearly 100 days into President Donald Trump's first term in office, the USA has appeared determined to oppose Russian Federation at every corner.

Russian Federation has repeatedly called for an independent investigation of the incident, which it says resulted from a Syrian government airstrike on a terrorist chemical weapons storehouse. "We believe it is of principal importance to prevent risks of a repeat of such steps in the future". Putin has said in confidence that an improvement in U.S. "We have to make sure we are impartial now in investigating this whole business".

The dim view of U.S. We won't get a political solution overnight. During his 2016 campaign, Trump said he would decide whether to honor the commitment to protect the Baltic republics against Russian aggression, based on whether those countries "have fulfilled their obligations to us".

Russia, Assad's staunchest ally, has insisted the Syrian leader is blameless and that rebels disbursed chemical weapons. The two men outlined varying visions for the future of Syrian dictator Bashar Assad, as well as an array of other worldwide issues, but both pledged to work on improving relations between their respective nations.

Mr Putin said that either gas belonging to the rebels was released when it was hit by a Syrian strike on a rebel arms dump, or the rebels faked the incident to discredit Assad.

Tillerson has aslo said while he had not seen hard evidence that Russian Federation knew ahead of time about the attack, he planned to urge Moscow to rethink its support for Assad during his forthcoming visit.
