Russian Federation accuses USA of unlawful Syria raid as Tillerson visits

The G7 Foreign Ministers' meeting in Lucca, and its extraordinary enlarged session focused on Syria, came after the recent airstrikes by the USA against Syrian government's forces, a move, the US administration said, was meant to deter the Syrian government from using chemical weapons again.

Tillerson's pointed comment came just days after US missile strikes on a Syrian air base allegedly used to launch gas attacks last Tuesday that killed up to 100 Syrian civilians.

The powers are at odds over the fate of Moscow's longtime ally President Bashar al Assad, a rift exacerbated after an alleged Syrian chemical attack last week that triggered a punitive United States missile strike.

The official said the presence of the drone couldn't have been a coincidence, and that Russian Federation must have known the chemical weapons attack was coming and that victims were seeking treatment.

It echoes the position of U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who flew straight from the summit in Italy to Moscow, carrying the G7's strong desire for a new start in Syria, but few concrete proposals to make it happen.

The Secretary of State's mission to Moscow comes as President Donald Trump forcefully denounced Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad in a televised interview.

"Stockpiles and continued use demonstrate that Russian Federation has failed in its responsibility to deliver on its 2013 commitment", Tillerson said. -Russian air safety agreement over Syria which Moscow suspended after the USA missile strikes.

He said if the Russians continued to support the regime in Damascus, they would be "contaminated" by its actions and could find themselves the target of new worldwide sanctions. He will look to gauge Russia's willingness to work together to fight Islamic State and rein in Assad, whom Moscow supports.

But in a Fox Business Network interview, the US president said he wouldn't intervene militarily against Assad unless the Syrian leader resorts to using weapons of mass destruction again.

Russian Federation blocked a Western effort at the U.N. Security Council on Wednesday to condemn the gas attack and push Moscow's ally Assad to cooperate with worldwide inquiries into the incident.

Tillerson met Putin in the Kremlin after talking to his Russian opposite number Sergei Lavrov for around three hours.

The official said that there might be a three-way meeting later this week in Moscow between officials from Russia, Syria and Iran.

He also rejected American claims of certain evidence that Assad ordered the chemical attack.

The White House has accused Moscow of trying to cover up Assad's use of chemical weapons after the attack on a town killed 87 people last week. "We do not want to be associated with this, this is not where we want our country to be, '" she said.

"The Defence Department's assessment is that the strike resulted in the damage or destruction of fuel and ammunition sites, air defence capabilities and 20% of Syria's operational aircraft", he said. He added that Russian Federation hoped to clarify the possibility of dialogue with the U.S.

On Monday, Col. John J. Thomas, a US military spokesman, said the USA has taken extra defensive precautions in Syria in case of possible retaliation against American forces for the cruise missile attack.
