Alabama's Republican Governor, Robert Bentley, stepped down yesterday on the same day state lawmakers opened impeachment hearings against him.
Robert Bentley has officially resigned as Alabama's governor, according to supernumerary District Attorney Ellen Brooks.
Some Alabama politicians also feel that the position of United States Senator, now held by Bentley appointed Luther Strange, should be elected by the people. "That's perhaps why we've never had the stereotypical "New South" governor that most liberals and egghead editorial writers crave".
The audio had been recorded by Dianne Bentley, the governor's former wife, who divorced him in 2015 after capturing Bentley speaking in such manner on the phone with Mason. It passed the House last week after a rare showing of bipartisan support in the Republican-controlled legislature. They alleged that Bentley used state resources to hide his relationship with mason. He repeatedly said he wouldn't quit, claiming there was no reason.
Bentley's efforts to dispose of the recordings led to numerous misuse of funds accusations he would later plead guilty to.

Bentley's resignation follows the ouster of former House Speaker Mike Hubbard, who left office in 2016 after being convicted on ethics charges, and former state Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore, who was suspended from his post previous year over an order opposing same-sex marriage. Prosecutors said that was a violation of a state law requiring all donations larger than $20,000 to be reported within two business days.
NAIJ.com gathered that public allegations of an affair between Bentley and former senior political adviser, Rebekah Caldwell Mason did not break out until March 2016, according to reports.
Tesco sales up 0.9% as recovery continues
He reported the chain's first full-year rise in United Kingdom sales since 2009/10, with comparable sales up 0.9%. They include Schroders Investment Management and Artisan Partners, which together hold a 9% stake in Tesco .
Last week the state Ethics Commission said it "found probable cause to believe" Bentley violated the Alabama Ethics Act and Fair Campaign Practices Act and recommended leveling felony charges against the governor.
He said he would work with his replacement, Lieutenant Governor Kay Ivey, who was sworn in as governor about an hour after his resignation. But new Republican Gov. Kay Ivey has decades of experience working in, and around, state politics.
On Friday, the governor made a plea for forgiveness from the steps of the Alabama Capitol, acknowledging that he had let people down but promising that he had done nothing illegal or anything to merit his removal from office.
News 5 has obtained the official resignation letter Robert Bentley submitted to step down as Governor of Alabama.
The 72-year-old Ivey is from Wilcox County, the same rural area where U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions grew up.
Ivey became Alabama's second female governor.
And while the driver's license office closures were not a big political win for Bentley-they were a national story and were ultimately reversed-that sort of attack on democracy should be a bigger scandal and blot on a politician's name than carrying on a tacky, obvious affair.
"[She] noticed not only the changes in her husband's wardrobe but also the changes in his demeanor", Zengerle said.
