The 31-year old winger links up with new Sunderland manager Simon Grayson, who brought McGeady to Deepdale on loan last season while managing Preston North End. "It was obviously a couple of weeks in the pipeline of negotiations, trying to get it over the line, and I'm delighted to come and play for a very big club".
Speaking out about the new manager, and it appears Cattermole agrees with the notion that Grayson is a good fit for the club, and heaped praise on his new boss - while claiming that a big name manager wasn't what the club needed at all following relegation. "Obviously a club like Sunderland is hard to turn down, but the stage I'm at in my career, I thought I had to think carefully about my next move". Grayson hasn't strayed too far from what he knows, but then again these players aren't has-beens; two of them are youngster with bags of potential whilst McGeady and Vaughan have signed on the back of fantastic campaigns for their former clubs.
Grayson told the official Sunderland website: "Aiden's career speaks volumes".
"With Simon Grayson coming to Sunderland, and having him previous year at Preston, he probably got the best out of me last season".
